Dan LaBotz petition

Dan LaBotz (Socialist Party USA) petitioning

for Ohio US Senate

Dan LaBotz is petitioning to become the Socialist Party USA Ohio candidate for the U.S. Senate in the November 2010 election. Dan is a Spanish teacher at an elementary school, and a   longtime socialist. He was a member of the International Socialist as well as a current member of Solidarity. Dan's written several important books and articles on the Mexican labor movement, spoke at Socialism09, and has a written for The Nation, Labor Notes, as well as many other left publications.

Dan is a democratic socialist who believes that Social Democrat parties such as those in Europe have become just like the Republicans and Democrats.  His campaign is based on a broad left set of proposals centered around the belief that our two major political parties represent the banks and corporations, not the people. With 10% unemployment in Ohio which is in reality16%, people loosing their homes to foreclosures and 25% of our children being raised in poverty we need people to be encouraged to fight back. “Let's have an alliance of workers, civil rights people, women, and unions...”

Other issues in his campaign include: immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces to end the immoral and illegal wars we are engaged in and to end the idea of the US as global policeman; cutting the military budget which makes it impossible to deal with the environment and jobs, and is a barrier to a single payer health care system which gets the insurance companies out of our health care system; focusing on social justice issues such as unequal opportunity for women, police racial profiling and attacks on African American and Latino men and women, discrimination against the GLBTQ community, ending "Don't Ask, Don't tell," and legalizing gay and lesbian marriages; building an enormous public transportation system; and using federal tax dollars to hold together the manufacturing plants and service industries of failing corporations as publicly owned and democratically controlled enterprises where workers and consumers can join together to produce for a new environmentally sound economy.

The campaign presents an opportunity to talk about a democratic socialist society as an alternative to capitalism, the corporations, and consumerism. Perhaps most important, it provides an opportunity to encourage people to take action and to fight back to keep their jobs, to keep their home, to fight for health care, and to defend their liberties.

At the very least the campaign should be able to connect with a layer of people looking for a left alternative to the Democratic Party.
